How Does AlertMeter® Work?

Through the use of a touchscreen or smartphone, an interface displays a series of different shapes that the user must identify as being the same or tap the one that is different.

AlertMeter then uses advanced algorithms to detect variances from the user’s pre-established personal baseline, taking into consideration:

  • Speed and accuracy,
  • Changes in test-taking behaviours
  • Situational awareness
  • Decision-making awareness
  • Shape Affinity
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Memory

And more.

If an employee scores outside their normal range (ONR), a supervisor is automatically notified.

What is an ONR?

Scoring an ONR, is an indicator that the user may not be in a state of mind where they are fit for work, and could pose a safety risk.

How is an ONR managed?

AlertMeter does not reveal the cause of impairment, but does give supervisors an objective basis in which to start a safety conversation with just the right workers, at just the right times.

From this conversation, supervisors simply follow existing company protocols appropriate to the situation.

  • Easy to integrate into existing company policies

Frequently Asked Questions

No.  AlertMeter does not identify the specific cause of possible impairment.  AlertMeter only indicates that the individual may not be performing cognitively within the parameters of their normal behaviour.  The score could not be used as the basis of Termination as the reason for impairment is not identified in the scoring.

AlertMeter is a top-screen indication that an employee may be struggling with alertness or distracted to the point of creating a safety risk.  It doesn’t identify the cause.  When an employee scores outside of their normal range, the company’s own policies take over, which would be similar to the types of safety conversations that currently take place between a supervisor and an employee.  Based on what the supervisor learns, appropriate steps are taken to keep the work environment and the employee safe.

No. AlertMeter’s score is only based on a statistical performance average of each individual employee. There is no universal metric that is represented in the scoring. One individual’s “100 %” will be different than another individual’s “100%”, and only displays as a percentage of that individual’s average performance.

AlertMeter scores are based on speed, accuracy, and individual behaviour. If someone else tries to take the test for another person, gaming algorithms are triggered because the behaviour of the test taker is not the same. It would call attention to the employee in question, which is not the end result they are seeking

AlertMeter gains acceptance by employee groups because it reduces the number of accidents in the workplace.  If AlertMeter indicates an employee scored outside his/her normal range, the conversation becomes an inquiry instead of an accusation, as to why the employee is less alert than normal (which may involve non-punitive reasons such as staying up all night with a sick child). A next-step process for notification by the AlertMeter’s top-screen score can be co-authored by a union and put into a Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The use of the AlertMeter does not subject a company to any different liability than they are already subject to for their existing rules, policies, and tools. In fact, a company that is doing everything possible to protect its workers, including adopting new systems and new technologies, is clearly demonstrating their commitment to mitigating impairment risks.

No, AlertMeter scoring cannot be construed as Proof of Disability under any circumstances.

Encouraging the cultural change to supporting alertness, through respect and regard to your employee’s wellbeing.
